Electric cars are becoming a popular way to drive due to their environmental benefits. Many people have seen the cost of owning a car and paying fuel taxes and auto insurance and they would like a cheaper alternative. Electric cars work much the same as traditional cars, by plugging into an electric charge station and collecting electricity from the local grid. They store the energy in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries that power an electric motor, that turns the tires.
One major benefit is that the vehicle will run all the time, even when not plugged in, and the engine will not be running off the battery at all. The entire run of the electric car can be powered off the battery, even though the motor will need to be recharged for the engine to start. This gives the owner of the electric vehicle a lower maintenance cost since the owner is not constantly having to worry about starting the engine or recharging the battery. This also makes it easier to start the car if it does not start on its own, as many drivers are not comfortable starting a car that does not run completely off the battery.
Another benefit is that there is no pollution released because electric cars do not use gasoline or any fossil fuels. Electricity is cleaner and does not contribute to smog, unlike gas that releases pollutants into the air. Electric cars are the future of transportation and there is a lot of interest in this technology.
